Quaid, who played team owner Tim Daland in the 1990 racing drama, made the comments on X after Hathaway was announced as a cast member alongside Tom Cruise. He said Kidman was the better choice for Cruise’s character and criticized Hathaway’s political views and appeal to the film’s audience.
Quaid also suggested that the sequel could fail at the box office, comparing its production schedule to the rushed editing process of the original movie.
Kidman starred as Dr. Claire Lewicki, the romantic lead opposite Cruise, in the first “Days of Thunder.” Tony Scott directed the film, which also featured Robert Duvall, Cary Elwes and John C. Reilly.
The sequel is scheduled for a June 2028 theatrical release. It was filmed for IMAX and is expected to arrive nearly 40 years after the original.
