Charlize Theron Reveals How Her ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Costars Helped Raise Her Daughter on Set

Charlize Theron is looking back on the special memories she made as a new mother while filming Mad Max: Fury Road in Namibia.

Speaking at the Academy Museum on Aug. 22, the actress said her daughter Jackson, whom she adopted in 2012, spent much of the six-month shoot with her. Theron said she had not arranged a caretaker, so her costars helped care for the baby between takes.

“All of the girls in this film and Nick Hoult basically raised her,” Theron said. Jackson stayed with Theron’s driver and assistant, while costars Zoë Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hoult helped look after her.

Theron said Jackson even learned to walk during the production, making the film especially meaningful to her. “Those are some of my favorite memories because she learned to walk on that movie,” she said.

Theron later adopted her second daughter, August, in 2015. She has said adoption was always her preferred way to build a family, influenced in part by her upbringing in South Africa.
