Dr. Dre Embraces AI as Music Industry Battles Over Copyright

Dr. Dre says he does not view artificial intelligence as a threat to music, comparing it to earlier technologies such as drum machines and synthesizers.

In a recent New York Times interview with longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine, Dre said people who fear AI may simply be uncomfortable with new creative tools. “It’s a new tool for creativity,” he said, adding that he uses AI to see what it can do with music he has already created. Iovine noted that producer Timbaland is also experimenting with AI.

Dre’s comments come as the music industry debates how AI should be used and regulated. AI companies including Suno and Anthropic face copyright lawsuits from music publishers and other rights holders over allegations that copyrighted music was used to train AI systems without permission.

At the same time, streaming platforms are moving toward greater transparency. Apple Music plans to label songs created with AI later this year, while Spotify has introduced labels for artists identified as AI-generated. Industry groups are also pushing for broader labeling standards for AI-produced music.

Dre, 61, was named a billionaire by Forbes in 2026. He and Iovine sold Beats to Apple for more than $3 billion in 2014.
