James Haven Says Jon Voight Accepted Him After Coming Out as Gay

James Haven says his father, actor Jon Voight, has accepted that he is gay after years of a strained relationship.

Haven, 53, discussed the conversation on the All Out with Jon Dean podcast. He said Voight, 87, called him several times after reading Haven’s recent coming-out story and told him, “So, I finally know who you are.”

Haven said he was surprised by his father’s response and felt it addressed years of feeling undervalued in their relationship. He said the two had a “really nice chat” and that he hopes to spend time with Voight in person soon.

Haven also said he believes his sister, Angelina Jolie, will respond with “a massive amount of respect” after learning about his coming out.

In his original statement, Haven recalled secretly wearing glitter and mascara as a child and said he is now ready to stop hiding who he is. “Coming out isn’t about becoming someone new,” he wrote. “It’s about allowing everyone else to meet the person who has been here all along.”
