John Hughes Once Planned a ‘Breakfast Club’ Sequel With the Original Cast as Adults

Anthony Michael Hall has revealed that director John Hughes once considered making a sequel to “The Breakfast Club” that would reunite its five main characters as adults.

Speaking on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Hall said Hughes discussed the idea during their last conversation in 1988, three years after the original film’s release. Hughes envisioned the characters meeting again in their 30s while working in the workforce.

“He talked about [the sequel] at that time,” Hall said, adding that he did not know whether Hughes had written a script.

Hall played Brian Johnson in the 1985 coming-of-age film, alongside Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy. The movie follows five teenagers from different backgrounds who form an unexpected bond while serving detention at their high school.

Hall also recalled Hughes approaching him with the idea for “Weird Science” while “The Breakfast Club” was still being filmed. Hughes told him he had an idea about two boys who create a girl using a computer. Hall later starred in the 1985 film.

Hughes died of a heart attack in 2009 at age 59. No sequel to “The Breakfast Club” was made.
