Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin Love Using Voice-to-Text, Says June Diane Raphael

June Diane Raphael has revealed that her former Grace and Frankie co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin regularly use voice-to-text for nearly all of their phone messages.

Speaking on The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast, Raphael said both actresses dictate entire texts out loud, including punctuation. She recalled them saying things like, “Tell Audrey that I can’t make it on Wednesday. Period,” followed by longer messages before sending them.

Raphael joked that even serious messages, such as informing someone that a longtime makeup artist had died, were dictated aloud.

She also shared that Fonda and Tomlin would sometimes sit next to each other using voice-to-text at the same time, causing one person’s voice to be picked up by the other’s phone. The mix-ups often led to playful shouting between the two, which Raphael described as “absolutely delightful.”

Despite the occasional confusion, Raphael said the pair had earned the right to use voice dictation instead of typing, calling them “legends.”

Grace and Frankie ran on Netflix from 2015 to 2022. The series starred Fonda and Tomlin as unlikely roommates after their husbands, played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, left them for each other. Raphael played Brianna, Grace’s daughter.

Raphael also praised both actresses for their character and impact, highlighting Fonda’s lifelong activism and saying she consistently uses her influence to help create a better future.
