Paris Jackson Reveals Why She Spoke at Father Michael Jackson’s 2009 Memorial

Paris Jackson has recalled the moment she decided to speak at her father Michael Jackson’s public memorial in 2009.

Speaking on the Aug. 11 episode of Call Her Daddy, Paris said her speech was not planned. She was 11 when Michael Jackson died, and during the memorial, the family wondered if one of the children would say something.

“No one moved, so I was like, ‘F--- it. We ball,’” Paris recalled. She said she felt that someone needed to speak, so she stepped onto the stage.

Paris said she has never watched footage of her speech because she has not wanted to revisit the moment. She described the experience as happening slowly and said it felt like an “energetic initiation” into a life spent speaking publicly.

Michael Jackson died in June 2009 at age 50. His public memorial was held 12 days later at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Paris has also recently spoken about becoming more private about her relationship with her father. In May, she said she no longer feels she owes the public personal details about Michael, including on his birthday, Father’s Day or the anniversary of his death.

“My relationship is the most beautiful relationship ever,” she said. “I’m in a very beautiful spot with my dad and I love that and it’s no one’s business.”
