Police Hope Released Ransom Notes Will Crack Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping Case

The Pima County Sheriff's Department has released two ransom notes tied to the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie as investigators continue to search for answers six months after her abduction.

Sheriff Chris Nanos said the decision to make the letters public was intended to help generate new leads. He said investigators hope someone will recognize the wording, writing style or other details in the notes and come forward with information.

The first note, sent on Feb. 2, claimed Nancy was alive and being held for ransom. A second note, sent on Feb. 6, alleged she had died unintentionally from a heart-related condition and had been buried.

Nanos described the investigation as "very active," with authorities reviewing forensic evidence, thousands of videos and photos, and tens of thousands of tips. He also said individuals questioned during the investigation have not necessarily been cleared and emphasized that Nancy's family are victims, not suspects.

Nancy's daughter, NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie, issued an emotional public appeal, urging anyone who recognizes the writing or has relevant information to contact investigators. She said tips can be submitted anonymously.

The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to Nancy's recovery or an arrest, while the Guthrie family has added a separate $1 million reward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Pima County Sheriff's Department at 520-351-4900.
