Robbie Williams has denied claims that he relapsed on cocaine during the World Cup, saying the substance seen near his nose in a viral video was Nicorette gum.

Speaking at a Q&A event in London on Thursday, the British singer said he had remained sober for more than 20 years. He said it was frustrating that millions of people had assumed he had returned to drug use after seeing the footage.

Williams joked that the controversy had also gained him new fans who praised what they believed was his return to cocaine.

The singer said his current addiction is focused on clothes and fashion. He explained that because he no longer drinks or uses drugs such as cocaine or MDMA, his obsessive personality has shifted toward fashion.
