“Rest in Power Hayden Paniettiere [sic],” McGowan wrote Friday on Instagram alongside a video of the ocean. “Don’t put kids in show business. None of this is normal. May her spirit be free of those who orchestrated.”
Panettiere, who began acting as a child, died last weekend. Authorities have said her cause and manner of death remain under investigation. Emergency dispatch calls reportedly described a possible overdose.
Panettiere had previously spoken publicly about struggles with opioid and other substance use in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.”
She became widely known for roles in “Heroes,” “Nashville” and “Scream 4.” Her former co-stars, including Viola Davis, Connie Britton and Emma Roberts, also shared tributes following her death.
Panettiere’s former fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, honored her Friday on what would have been her 37th birthday. He thanked her fans and friends for their support and said they were celebrating her life, spirit and the love she brought to others.
