O’Donnell, 64, appeared in the first episode of the show’s third and final season as Sister Mary, a nun who breaks her vow of chastity and loses her virginity to Miranda Hobbes, played by Nixon, 60.
Speaking on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, O’Donnell said filming the scene was “horrifying” because she was nervous about acting as if the characters had just had sex.
“The kissing wasn’t hard,” O’Donnell said. “But the laying in bed and the wanting us to act like we had just done it. I was like, ‘Uhh.’”
O’Donnell said Nixon had called her about the role without initially revealing the intimate nature of the scene. When she later read the script and discovered she would be in bed with Nixon, she said, “Oh my God.”
O’Donnell said she had only filmed one other sex scene, with the late Julian McMahon on “Nip/Tuck.” She also praised Nixon, calling her “the real deal” and saying she greatly admires her acting and commitment to social causes.
Nixon previously said the show’s creator, Michael Patrick King, had been trying for years to find a role for O’Donnell. She said O’Donnell brought both humor and emotional depth to the character.
