Sandra Bullock Feared for Her Mental Health While Caring for Bryan Randall

Sandra Bullock has spoken about the emotional toll of caring for her late partner, photographer Bryan Randall, while raising their two children.

Randall was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2020 and died in 2023. Bullock said on the SmartLess podcast that she feared for her mental health while balancing caregiving with filming The Lost City in 2022.

During reshoots in the Dominican Republic, Bullock said she was surviving on only a few hours of sleep. She eventually stopped filming and decided to take a break from acting, saying she had “nothing to give.”

Bullock said Randall had asked her to keep his illness private. She told only her sister about his diagnosis and said the secrecy made an already difficult period more isolating. She also described grieving Randall years before his death as his condition progressed.

To care for him, Bullock hired four nurses to provide round-the-clock support and arranged for a therapist specializing in terminal illness and grief to help their children, Louis and Laila.

Bullock said the experience gave her a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by caregivers. She expressed gratitude to those who supported her family, saying she had initially felt alone and unsure where to turn.
