Sean Astin Recalls Patty Duke’s Fierce Protection During His Early Acting Career

Sean Astin has reflected on growing up as the son of Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke, saying her strong desire to protect him sometimes created difficult moments.

Speaking to The Guardian, the Lord of the Rings actor and SAG-AFTRA president said Duke wanted to give him a happier childhood than the one she experienced. "I think she wanted to rectify the pain and trauma of her childhood," Astin said.

Astin began acting at age 10 in the 1981 TV movie Please Don't Hit Me, Mom and became widely known at 14 for his role in The Goonies.

He recalled an incident on the set of an unnamed project when a crew member quietly criticized his speech. Although Astin said he did not hear the remark, Duke confronted the situation forcefully. He said her reaction was more upsetting than the comment itself, describing her as an intensely protective parent.

Astin also praised his mother's strength, joking that despite standing just 4 feet 11 inches tall, she could intimidate almost anyone.

Patty Duke, who won an Academy Award for The Miracle Worker and starred in The Patty Duke Show, died in 2016 at the age of 69. Astin has continued to honor her legacy, remembering her for the love and compassion she showed throughout her life and career.
