Stockard Channing Says ‘Grease’ Cartoon of Rizzo Was “Unfortunate” and Still Haunts Her

Stockard Channing, who played Rizzo in the 1978 musical Grease, still dislikes the cartoon version of her character shown during the film’s animated opening.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Channing agreed that the drawing treated her unfairly, especially around her cheeks. After seeing the image again, she said it was “even worse than I remember.”

Actress Dianne Wiest, Channing’s co-star in Practical Magic 2, was surprised by the cartoon and jokingly told Channing to cast a spell on whoever created it. Channing played along before explaining that she has watched Grease only twice—once at its premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and again 20 years later at the same venue.

Despite being proud of the film, Channing said she avoids watching it because she is “afraid.” Grease remains a popular classic, known for songs such as “Summer Nights” and its starring roles for John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

Channing is now promoting Practical Magic 2, the sequel to the 1998 fantasy film. She and Wiest return as the aunts of sisters played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The new film follows the family as they travel to the United Kingdom in an attempt to break a centuries-old curse.

Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 11.
