Taron Egerton Opens Up About Estranged Father and Colin Firth’s Support

Taron Egerton is opening up about his complicated relationship with his father and the important role Colin Firth has played in his life.

During an episode of Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast released Monday, Aug. 10, the 36-year-old “Apex” star revealed that he has not spoken to his father for several years.

Egerton said he and his father had a “fairly functional relationship” when he was growing up, but their relationship became more difficult as he got older.

“I’ll always love him, I just don’t think we work very well in terms of our relationship,” Egerton said. He added that eventually he decided to step away from the relationship and has not seen his father since.

Egerton explained that his parents were in their early 20s when he was born in Liverpool, England. They separated when he was nearly 3 years old, after which his mother moved to Wales to start a new life.

His mother later met Egerton’s stepfather when the actor was 14.

Looking back on his childhood, Egerton said he now realizes he may have experienced more anxiety than he understood at the time. He described his mother as a single parent who was studying for a degree while working to make ends meet.

Despite those challenges, Egerton stressed that he had a happy and supportive childhood.

“She was a great mom; I never felt that I wanted anything or missed anything,” he said.

Egerton also spoke warmly about his relationship with Colin Firth, whom he considers a fatherly figure. The two actors worked together in the first two “Kingsman” movies, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” in 2015 and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” in 2017.

Egerton recalled going through a difficult period after breaking up with his first girlfriend. At the time, he said, he was partying heavily as a way of coping and was sometimes arriving on set in poor shape.

Firth, according to Egerton, responded with kindness rather than judgment.

“He was never anything other than gentle and fatherly and understanding,” Egerton said.

The actor described Firth as a generous and kind person and said their relationship remains one of the reasons he would like to return for another “Kingsman” sequel.

“One of the reasons I’d like to make another installment is because it would be fun to get to ride with Colin once more,” Egerton said.

The “Kingsman” franchise has released three films so far. Firth and Egerton appeared together in the first two, while 2021’s “The King’s Man” served as a prequel.

For Egerton, the possibility of another film would mean more than simply returning to a popular franchise. It would also give him the chance to work alongside an actor who offered him understanding and support during a difficult time in his life.
