The Aug. 30 episode explores an alternate reality in which Maggie Greene, played by Lauren Cohan, and Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, never experienced the zombie apocalypse. In the episode, Beth is an aspiring singer living in New York City, while Maggie visits her from their family farm in Georgia.
Kinney, 41, said the opportunity to reprise Beth came as a surprise. After receiving the script, she immediately agreed to return, describing the experience as a celebration of her connection to the character and the series.
The episode also reunites Beth with Maggie. Their emotional embrace carries added significance for longtime fans because Beth died in Season 5 shortly before Maggie was able to find and reunite with her.
“I think it is a hug that never got to happen,” Kinney said.
Cohan said the episode gave both the characters and viewers an opportunity to grieve and celebrate Beth in a different way.
Kinney also contributed her own music to the episode. She performs part of her original song “Reasons to Stay Alive,” which she suggested for the scene because its lyrics fit Maggie’s circumstances in the alternate timeline.
The actress said discussions about bringing Beth back had taken place several times over the years, including during the final season of the original The Walking Dead. However, the Dead City appearance was the first time the idea became a concrete offer.
Kinney is also preparing an EP, I Cried When You Died, inspired in part by her time on The Walking Dead. The project, due Sept. 18, includes recordings of songs Beth performed on the series as well as new material.
Meanwhile, Cohan suggested that the Dead City alternate reality could potentially be explored further, saying that “nothing’s off the table.”
The Walking Dead: Dead City airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC and AMC+.
