Doja Cat Opens Up About Past Cocaine and Alcohol Problems

Doja Cat has opened up about her past struggles with cocaine and alcohol, as well as her mental health and self-image.

In a TikTok video shared Monday, the singer said she had struggled with cocaine about eight years ago but is now past that period.

“I have struggled with cocaine — could’ve been like eight years ago,” Doja said. “But I’m well past that. Thank God.”

The 30-year-old singer, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, also discussed the connection between mental illness and social media. She said undiagnosed mental health issues, combined with social media, can worsen negative thoughts and affect how people view themselves.

In another video, Doja spoke about her past relationship with alcohol. She said she had never considered herself an alcoholic but acknowledged that drinking had caused problems for her.

“The best example for my experience is using the internet as a means of validation to the negative thoughts in my head, which were then brought on by drinking alcohol,” she said.

Doja also addressed criticism from fans who have accused her of hating being a Black woman. She said she had struggled with self-hate from a young age, particularly after moving to a predominantly white neighborhood when she was about 8.

“I think I hated myself since I was — could have been like 8 years old,” she said.

The comments come months after Doja revealed that she had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). In March, she said she had been in therapy for years while dealing with what she described as an “agonizing condition.”

Doja said she felt it was important to speak openly about her experiences and that the timing felt right to address them publicly.
