Morgan Fairchild Reveals the Surprising Family Connection Behind a Friends Wedding Scene

A behind-the-scenes story from Friends has revealed how a member of the Arquette family unexpectedly stepped in during one of the show's most memorable episodes.

Actress Morgan Fairchild, who played Chandler Bing’s mother, Nora Tyler Bing, recently looked back on the making of the two-part season 7 finale, “The One With Chandler and Monica’s Wedding.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fairchild recalled that scheduling problems prevented Kathleen Turner, who played Chandler’s father Charles Bing, from attending the rehearsal dinner scenes.

Turner had made her debut on Friends in the previous episode, “The One With Chandler’s Dad.” Fairchild had already appeared on the show twice before, in seasons 1 and 5.

Despite concerns that the two actresses might clash, Fairchild said they got along extremely well.

“I think they thought Kathleen and I would be divas and weird together, but we weren’t at all,” Fairchild said. “We had great fun. I love Kathleen, obviously a great talent, but also very funny and just a terrific human being.”

Fairchild then shared a detail that viewers never knew.

“People don’t know this, obviously because they never saw it, but we were shooting two different episodes, and Kathleen was not available to do the rehearsal dinner the week we actually shot it,” she explained.

Alexis Arquette Stepped In

With Turner unavailable, the production needed someone to stand in for her during filming. The role was temporarily filled by Alexis Arquette, sister of actor David Arquette and, at the time, Courteney Cox’s sister-in-law.

Cox, who played Monica Geller, was married to David Arquette from 1999 until 2014.

Alexis Arquette had already appeared briefly on Friends. She played a waiter in “The One With Chandler’s Dad” and previously appeared as a customer in the season 6 episode “The One With Rachel’s Sister.”

Arquette was a transgender actress and activist whose film credits included Pulp Fiction, The Wedding Singer, Bride of Chucky and She’s All That. Her life and transition were also documented in the 2007 film Alexis Arquette: She’s My Brother.

She died in 2016 at the age of 47. The Alexis Project, established in her honor, is dedicated to improving mental and physical health care for LGBTQ+ patients.

Kathleen Turner’s Daughter Also Appeared

Fairchild revealed another unexpected family connection from the wedding episode.

When it was time to film the wedding scenes, Turner asked Fairchild if her daughter, singer Rachel Ann Weiss, could attend the set.

“[Turner] said, ‘Oh, Morgan, my daughter’s a big fan of the show. Would you mind if she’s like an extra and sat with us at the wedding?’” Fairchild recalled.

Fairchild said Weiss ultimately appeared in the wedding scene as a flower girl, sitting alongside the other actors.

“So that’s really Kathleen’s daughter sitting with us at the wedding as a flower girl,” she said.

Fairchild said she enjoyed working with Turner and hoped they might have returned to Friends for more storylines involving the characters’ parents.

“I kind of hoped they’d have us come back and do some more… with the different parents and stuff that they brought in over the years,” Fairchild said. “Because we had a great time working together.”
